Stadsstillevens/City-stills was one of my first projects. I started it in 1976 while still at art-school and finished it 1978 after having applied for and received a grant from the Municipal Archives of Amsterdam. Later I added to the series.
With Stadsstillevens/City Stills I wanted to depict Amsterdam as an urban landscape where one travelled through daily, seen
almost from the corner of the eye, without excluding anything intruding the sight of the traveler (cars, traffic signs, lampposts etc.).
The project was in a documentary fashion which was in breach with the ongoing Dutch tradition of what was labeled social photography.
