Stadsstillevens/City-stills was one of my first serious projects. I started it in 1976 while still at art-school and finished it 1978 after I applied for and received a grant from the Municipal Archives of Amsterdam.
With Stadsstillevens/City Stills I wanted to depict Amsterdam as a an urban landscape where one travelled through, seen almost
from the corner of the eye, without excluding anything intruding the the sight of the slow eye of the traveler (cars, traffic signs, lampposts etc.).
The project was in a documentary fashion which was in breach with the ongoing Dutch tradition of what was then called social photography.
