The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam recently acquired a series of photographs from my 1976 to 1980 travels to Surinam, a former colony of the Netherlands.
From the 1976 trip they bought 9 photographs of the protest-march for land-rights by the indigenous Arawak and Carib Indians and from the 1980 travel to Surinam a vintage print of the first press conference Desi Bouterse held after 'The coup of 16' Coup d'État on February 25th.
They already hold photographs from Postwar housing in the Netherlands (which they commissioned in 1985), a selection from Snelweg>Highways in the Netherlands (which they acquired in 1996) and a abstract Still-life from the 1980s.

Symposium and website
In December 1976 I photographed a 4-day protest-march for land-rights by the Indigenous Carib and Arawak people of Surinam, a former colony of the Netherlands which became independent just the year before. Srefidensifoto.org an initiative by photographer & cultural anthropologist Sara Blokland is now showing a selection online. July 29th Srefidensi-foto and the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum organized a symposium on these protests where the photographs were projected and published in a newsprint publication.

Exhibition Huis Marseille, Amsterdam | Dec. 10 - March 5
After Baldus, an investigative project into the relationships of photographic histories, memory and memorialization based on the landscapes of Picardy as depicted in the 1855 photographic album Chemin de Fer du Nord by Eduard-Dennis Baldus, had it's first museum presentation In Huis Marseille. The presentation consisted of an album of 50 original prints the same size as the original Baldus album, printed by ourselves. Visitors where allowed to leaf through the album with white-gloved hands. We combined After Baldus with the projection of a film we commissioned of the original album being leafed through by the conservator Jessica Johnston. The sound of those old pages being turned over added to the physical sensation of leafing through our After Baldus album.

The publication Autophoto can be bought here

After Baldus publication. Meant as a souvenir to the exhibition we published a small zine, designed by Studio Joost Grootens, in a numbered and signed edition of 100 copies. It included a text on the project by Alison Nordström and two signed and numbered prints made by Theo Baart and myself. The publication has sold out.
